Biblical Literacy

You may be familiar with Jay Leno’s interviews on the street in which people are asked simple questions. Doreen Olson, executive minister of Christian Formation, remembers an episode in which people were asked questions from the Bible. “Can you name one of the ten commandments?” “What were some of the names of Jesus’ disciples?” The respondents’ answers were hilarious but also troubling, for those who’s ministry focuses on teaching these things.

We need to take seriously the state of biblical/theological literacy levels in this movement we call the Covenant. Since our very inception, we’ve been a people who prioritize the word of God. Our forebears typically asked the question, “Where is it written?” or “What do the Scriptures say?”

This decline is concerning, and the Covenant is determined to do something about it. In order to resource our churches in the fight against biblical illiteracy, we have created a number of different pathways for you to approach biblical literacy within your church.
