Asian American Covenanters Contribute to New Book
CHICAGO, IL (February 13, 2006) - Several pioneering Asian American leaders in
the Evangelical Covenant Church are among the contributors to the new
book Growing Healthy Asian American Churches.
InterVarsity Press published the book, which was released in January and
features contributions from members of several denominations. It is
being produced in partnership with the Catalyst Leadership Center.
"This will prove to be a significant work for not just Asian American
ministries, but all those who are in multicultural contexts," says Greg
Yee, the director of congregational and leadership development for the
Pacific Southwest Conference.
Asian American leaders face the challenge of preserving a culture and
heritage while also reaching younger generations and the large number of
unchurched individuals.
Covenant leaders who have contributed to the project are:
- Peter Cha, a member of Libertyville Covenant Church in Libertyville,
Illinois, and a teacher at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
- Soong-Chan Rah, the new professor of church growth and evangelism at
North Park Theological Seminary. He is finishing his pastorate at
Cambridge Community Covenant Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Steve Wong, pastor of Grace Community Covenant Church in Palo Alto,
California.
- Helen Lee, a member of Parkwood Community Evangelical Covenant
Church and a former editor of Christianity Today.
- Nancy Sugikawa, formerly on staff at Newsong Covenant Church in
Irvine, California.
- Dave Gibbons, pastor of Newsong Covenant Church.
- Steve Kang, former founding co-pastor of Parkwood Community Covenant
Church in Lombard, Illinois, who now teaches at Gordon Conwell
Theological Seminary.
