Justice and the Language of Worship

Brian McLaren is doing some traveling and speaking on his new book: Everything Must Change. According to Covenant News Service, rather than just book signing, McLaren hosts “training and worship events.” Although McLaren speaks several times, the worship times incorporate new music and the creative use of art in liturgy. “A key element to mobilizing people in our churches is liturgy,” he explains.

The Thaw

I stepped outside after church on Saturday night, and snow was floating down in huge, white flakes. Overnight, the spring snow blanketed the lawns and trees of northern Colorado. By Easter sunrise, the sky was crystal clear, and the shimmer of light on snow was stunning. Our White Easter was nothing like a White Christmas, because the first light brought enough heat to melt the snow. As I drove to church, I thought, “Narnia is thawing.”

Mandating the Blend

Something Scott Ladd posted in the last thread made me think of my valley-days. He mentioned that his church mandates 80-20 worship planning (in terms of traditional/contemporary).

Prayer for Epiphany

As we emerge from Christmas and enter Epiphany, I’m reminded of God’s heart to include. Perhaps exclusion is the worst of our sins and inclusion is God’s best in us. The gospel story tells us that the Wise Men brought gifts to infant Jesus, worshiped Jesus as “King,” and revealed him as such to a waiting world (Matt. 2.1-12). They were the first Gentiles to encounter and worship the incarnate Christ. Jesus had come for Israel and to all nations, and the Magi were the first to illustrate this Good News.

I am looking for interesting and unusual ways to shape our Christmas Eve services. We'd like to re-energize a traditional format of telling the Christmas story, singing some familiar carols and using candles with Silent night. Can you share some of your high impact and low production ideas for Christmas Eve services?

A Worship Evangelism Reversal

Those of us who attended the 2007 Worship Connection event in Denver had the opportunity to hear Sally Morgenthaler, and many more of us have read her book Worship Evangelism. The principles of that book have done a lot to shape worship ministry in contemporary churches in the beginning of this century. In various ways—whether we realize it or not—many of us have taken Sally’s advice when we have sought to make worship more culturally relevant and more accessible to the unchurched.

At my church, we’re in a teaching series called, “Everybody”. You might imagine, this is a series about Christian community—including, involving, and celebrating the importance of—others. I suppose any theme or chosen text has the potential to leave us saying, “Yeah, yeah, yeah…” or “Yes God.” What about this one?

I gave a short workshop at the MWC Annual Meeting yesterday.
“Come, follow me.” Three simple words, with the power to change the world, took my small congregation on a remarkable journey through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. We had no way of knowing, when we set out, what we would find, what we would see, hear, feel, and experience. Engaging our imagination to take us into Jesus’ story, we followed on the heels of this traveling Son of God as he made his way from life to death, and back again.

Touched by the Trends

As a piano-playing, female worship leader, the nineties were tough for me. All the hot, new worship tunes were written, played and sung by men sporting guitars. I began my tour of duty in the eighties, which were friendly to worship leader/pianists, because of (horrible) things such as excessive modulations and boorish “medleys”. I enjoyed fitting-in despite my negative feelings about the music I was actually playing. But then everything changed— guitars were in and pianos were out. I was out.

As pastors and worship leaders, we’re both privileged and burdened to lead God’s people in corporate worship and faithfulness. Romans 12:1, the locus classicus of New Covenant worship, beckons us to faithfully present—ourselves.

Sally Morgenthaler on Collaboration

In just two short months, the Covenant worship "tribe" will be gathering in Denver to explore what worship together really means. What does it truly mean to worship corporately? Have we ignored the "we" of worship in favor of the "I"? And that question isn't just for Sunday morning. It's relevant for how we craft this most sacred of experiences. If worship is the community formed by God (the Church) interacting with the community of God (the Trinity), why do we as worship leaders keep planning worship all by ourselves, stuck in our cubicles? After all, liturgy literally means, "The work of the people."

Worship Weariness

I met with my spiritual director this week. After our usual beginning, a time of silence and listening, the room became a confessional booth for me. I confessed the distress and weariness in my soul, particularly in regards to planning and leading worship. For the past couple months, the spark just hasn't been there. The delight of worship leading has felt more like a burden. Instead of feeling inspired to lead others, feelings of dread have slowly crept in as the weekly routine beckoned. As a full-time worship pastor, this has created some angst, some inner turmoil that I needed to pay attention to. My spiritual director gently listened to me process my "stuff" ...

Actual Praise 1

Remember when… the term “authentic worship” came in vogue? I do. I didn’t care for the term, because it sounded (to me) like those who claimed they were worshiping “authentically” were somehow suggesting that others were "inauthentic" in their worship.

Welcoming Failure

John Smith preached on “failure” last weekend. While I’m convinced we shouldn’t seek failure—or abandon ourselves to failure—maybe the experience of failure is something we cannot, and should not try to, avoid.

Big Changes

I don’t know what your “style” of worship is, but for the last 3-4 years, my church has been a “tapestry” or “mosaic” of style. (Some would call this “blended,” but that always makes me think of gray mush.) We’ve attempted, sometimes beautifully and sometimes clumsily, to “do it all,” to reflect the body of Christ in all its diversity. And now all that’s changing.

Response-ability

I might have a measuring stick that measures the truthfulness of our worship. It’s not a complex instrument; rather it’s crude, simplistic and only performs one function. It’s not very useful for measuring others; although, at times, it does work on people you know well and sincerely love.

I’ve become someone who resents noise. I rarely listen to the radio or, even, my iPod anymore. I wonder if I’m in trouble. Am I like the psalmist who sat by the rivers of Babylon and wept, because he or she could not remember the songs of Zion?

The “A Word”

I’ve been at PCC for 7 years. We’ve put them at the front of the worship gathering. We’ve put them at the end, right before the benediction. We’ve put them at the offering set-up time. We’ve woven them throughout the gathering. We’ve banished them outright and instead relied on pre- and post-gathering slide shows, bulletin inserts and e-mail blasts.

When the Words Get in the Way

So here’s an interesting question: What if you like a song and you want to do it with your congregation, but you don’t feel like all of the words are solid? Maybe it’s a great song but something about it isn’t theologically sound, or maybe it emphasizes something that you don’t want to emphasize. Maybe it’s not gender-inclusive.

The Worshiping Artist (3)

Chapter three’s story speaks to me on many different subjects. If you have a church of 300, how could there be only one person qualified to lead the singing? Are any of your churches in that situation? Are we offering opportunities in all of the worship arts to any interested members? Are we investing in developing new leaders? Also, how are we encouraging our churches to be involved in the message of the songs we sing?

Same Boat (Monday at Noon)

Henri Nouwen suggests, “The authentic spiritual life finds it’s basis in the human condition which all people—whether they are Christians or not—have in common.” Sometimes we row against the tide of this reality, wondering why our contrary efforts don’t create in us: clean hearts, right spirits or the joy of our salvation.

The Worshiping Artist (1)

Rory Noland’s name is well known to many of us as director of music for Willow Creek Community Church for twenty years and as author. His first book, Heart of the Artist (1999) addressed some of the basic issues concerning the individual worship artist, including artistic temperament, working in community, aiming toward servanthood and excellence. His second book, Thriving as an Artist (2003), tackled more of the long-term issues of individuals: sustaining passion, cultivating confidence and dealing with rejection and failure. The Worshiping Artist (2007) goes much farther in two different directions...

For the Beauty, Glory, Love (Monday at Noon)

Dave and I and friends went on a 10-mile hike in Rocky Mountain National Park a few days ago. It’s the sweetest hike in the park. The trail to Ouzel Lake follows glacier fed streams, passes three impressive cascades, climbs to the best views in the park then journeys downward to a forested lake below the rocky ridges of the continental divide. God is there.

Epic Storytelling

Last week I referred to the new Harry Potter book that’s coming out on July 21. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is something that a lot of us have looked forward to for a long time. Will Snape turn out to be truly evil or is he still somehow loyal to Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix? Will Voldemort be destroyed? Will good conquer evil? And perhaps the biggest question of all: Will Ron, Hermione or (gulp) Harry die?

We’ve been singing a song in worship gatherings at PCC lately that has really fired me up and reminded me of the Church’s identity and mission in the world. It’s called “Let the Church Rise,” by Israel Houghton and Jon Stockstill, and I first heard it at Worship:Connection in Denver last February. Adrienne Reedy introduced it, and I remember thinking it was cool. For whatever reason, I rediscovered it recently, and we began to sing it at church. Here are the lyrics… see how the Spirit speaks to you through them:

The Scripture Habit (Monday at Noon)

Knowing one’s God is connected to knowing one’s self, and, of course, knowing self is connected to knowing God (John Calvin, among others). These cannot happen each aside from the other. As a Christian disciple and novice spiritual director, I’ve noticed three means by which most of us experience God and grow into our true selves.

I'm interested in what might be working/not working in your setting. We're a church of 240, set in a small town in MN. Thanks. pastorsteve@gracecov.net
