Our Church Planting System
Mammals and Reptiles - the
church planting world is largely divided into these two realms. Both are legitimate
and both have advantages and disadvantages.
In the reptile world,
the strategy is to lay as many eggs as possible. But with so much attention
given to starting as many as possible, little is done or can be done to
provide nurture. Those that do hatch are left to fend for themselves.
Yes, the fatality rate is high, but so many are produced that the species
moves forward.
For most of the history of Christianity in most parts of
the world, the approach has been reptilian and remains a critical component.
In the mammal world,
there are relatively
few offspring by comparison so a high survival rate is essential. Mammals
therefore give lots of attention to offspring as they nurture them towards
self-sufficiency.
The Covenant takes a mammalian approach. We start a new
church every two to three weeks on average, which is a very aggressive
rate for a group our size. But it is not so many that new churches feel
lost or out there on their own. Ninety percent of the churches we start
end up as fully-rooted congregations, a very high result. Those churches
would say the approach and nurture of the Covenant has been a critical
factor in their development.
