About the Department of Compassion, Mercy, and Justice
In June 2006, the Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church took a historic step in creating the Department of Compassion, Mercy, and Justice (CMJ). This step was taken to align the essential core values of compassion, mercy and justice with the current structure of the ECC. These values have been at the heart of the ECC’s mission in and to the world since our founding over 120 years ago. The creation of this new department solidifies the commitment of the ECC to be a Great Commission and Great Commandment church, recognizing that one without the other reflects a partial and incomplete gospel message.
The Department of Compassion, Mercy, and Justice (CMJ) is a collaborative effort with the ministry departments within the ECC, its institutions and affiliates and other non-Covenant entities, desiring to foster and develop ministries that meet the holistic needs of people it seeks to evangelize and serve. In partnership with local Covenant churches and regional conferences, this department is a resource and an encouragement to assist and further local and global ministries of compassion, mercy and justice.
