Arson Suspected in Biwabik Church Fire
BIWABIK, MN (September, 1998) - Arson is suspected in a fire that heavily damaged the Biwabik Covenant Church in Biwabik, Minnesota, according to a story in the local Biwabik Times newspaper. Pastor Jeffrey R. Jones said the investigation continues, though no arrests have been made. Early speculation was that lightening sparked the fire. Jones says it is believed a number of youths may have been involved.
Church members continue to worship in a local school. The services have gone very well, according to the pastor, who expressed appreciation for new red and silver hymnals donated by the Department of Communication to replace those damaged in the fire. "We also were able to use our new, used copy machine (donated by a Covenant Church)," Jones observed.
Recently the pastor preached on the theme, "The 45-day Prayer Challenge," drawing attention to the need to be much in prayer for the church during the coming days as the congregation works through the myriad of details that accompanying such a tragic event. "We are eager to see how God is going to move mountains in all of our lives," Jones said.
The pastor shared a list of needs on the part of the church, staff and members:
- Strength and direction for all during this time - in particular, the ability to focus on Christ in the midst of so many distractions.
- The power of God to move mountains in these next 45 days. "I pray that God will show us, even surprise us, as to how He is working through this situation," Jones said.
- Basic supplies for Sunday school (Crayons, pencils, paper, Bibles, file cabinets and storage containers.
- Area rugs for the several classrooms that are being temporarily used. Some cushioning is needed to cover the tile floors, especially for nursery areas during approaching cold weather.
- Toys, supplies and furniture for the nursery.
- One VCR and TV (or a combination unit) with supporting stand for class use.
- Portable electric piano for use by the worship team.
- Prayerful support that insurance coverage will be adequate.
- Financial assistance to help the church work through this stressful period.
