Two Covenant Family Homes Spared from Disaster

SAN DIEGO, CA (January 8, 2001) - No local Evangelical Covenant churches have been damaged by a fire that has burned nearly 11,000 acres of land in East San Diego County.

The fire is now considered to be 85 percent contained, according to local newspaper reports. A U.S. Forest Service spokesperson predicted the fire would be fully contained by the end of the week.

No Covenant parishioners suffered damage to their homes, though at least two families endured some tense hours.

Long-time Covenanters Win and Marge Dean, members of Mt. Miguel Covenant Church, were forced to evacuate their home after the fire started in nearby Alpine January 3. The fire moved away from the area, aiding the Dean family, but another Mt. Miguel Covenant Church family was threatened shortly thereafter.

Darren and Pam Curtis, who live in Jamul, reported they could see the glow of the flames about one mile from their house. Once more, however, the fire moved in another direction.

An estimated $10 million has been spent fighting the fire, involving some 1,600 firefighters. Damage to homes has been kept to a minimum, authorities report.
