Missionaries Not In Area of Shopping Mall Blast

MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA (January 11, 2001) - Covenant missionaries living near the site of a car bombing in Medellin Wednesday evening were not involved in the incident or injured, Covenant News Service has learned.

A car bomb exploded around 7:45 p.m. in the parking lot of El Tesoro, an upscale shopping mall in the southeastern part of Medellin, injuring more than 50 people, including a prenant woman and a baby. One person died in the blast. Covenant missionaries Gary and Mary Lou Sander and Cathy Campobello live just a few blocks from the shopping mall, but were not in the immediate area of the mall when the blast occurred.

President Andrés Pastrana arrived in Medellín early this morning. Following a meeting with security officials, the president offered 100 million pesos as a reward to anyone with information that leads to apprehension of the suspects.

More information will be posted on the Covenant news site as it becomes available.
