Vikings Defeat Millikin in Conference Play
CHICAGO, IL (January 25, 2001) - The North Park University (NPU) men's basketball team has played its way out of recent games by half-time, falling behind by an average of 18 points in three previous games.
On Wednesday, the Vikings reversed that trend, scoring the game's first 12 points and holding on for a 79-66 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin home victory over Millikin University. The strong start enabled NPU to take a 33-21 lead at the half as the Vikings moved to 10-6 overall, 1-4 in CCIW play.
Millikin (8-8, 1-4) opened the game with six missed field goals and three turnovers as the Big Blue went scoreless for 5:59. A pair of three-point baskets by LaRon Kittrell (14 points) helped the home team start well offensively and a lay-up by Byron Pullen put NPU up 17-2 with 12:53 left in the half for its biggest lead of the game. Millikin never got closer than six points the rest of the contest.
Pullen totaled 16 points in 16 minutes off the bench to lead all scorers. Four other Vikings scored in double digits, with 6-foot-10 center Brandon Donaldson adding 12 points and 12 rebounds while clogging up Millikin's inside scoring efforts.
A three-point basket by Mike Dunn (15 points) helped Millikin close to within six points, 61-55, with 2:15 left. But NPU made 9 of 10 foul shots in the final 1:20 to end a four-game losing streak.
