Earthquake Survivors Need Additional Support
AHMEDABAD, INDIA (February 7, 2001) - International relief agencies, including Covenant World Relief, continue the effort to assist tens of thousands of people suffering the aftermath of this country's most deadly earthquake in 50 years.
Hardest hit was Ahmedabad, a city larger than Chicago, where high-rise buildings and a hospital were reduced to rubble, claiming lives and making rescue efforts difficult.
Covenant World Relief, the relief and development arm of the Evangelical Covenant Church, is working through its World Relief partner to respond to urgent requests for tarpaulins, blankets, basic food items, sanitary supplies, utensils, emergency medical supplies and water - this area is in the midst of a prolonged drought. Long-term commitments include working with local churches to help victims rebuild their homes.
A number of Covenanters have expressed interest in making contributions to a fund to assist earthquake survivors. Gifts may be sent to Covenant World Relief, 5101 N. Francisco Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60625, designated "India Earthquake."
Covenant World Relief gifts also provide health care through the Covenant church in Congo; family counseling through the Covenant church in Mexico; care for orphans in Lebanon, Colombia and Bangladesh; community banks in Rwanda, Cambodia, Mozambique; and a variety of development projects in Laos, Thailand, Nicaragua and other countries. Covenant World Relief currently supports projects in more than 25 countries.
