Korean Congregation Moves Into Own Space
DES PLAINES, IL (February 13, 2001) - A Korean-American congregation celebrated the birth of a new building when they celebrated the birth of a savior Christmas Eve.
Hallelujah Covenant Church had its first service at its 8,500-square-foot building after having used Edgebrook Covenant Church in Chicago as its home for nearly 10 years. The congregation enjoyed its first Sunday morning service December 31.
Pastor Yang Chung is grateful for the flexibility that the new two-story building offers his church. National Covenant Properties participated in financing the project. A Christian Scientist church had used the building until recently. The building provides a church sanctuary that seats close to 300, as well as much-needed office space. The facility is located only a few miles from Edgebrook Covenant.
"We can do a lot of activities (with the new building)," the pastor said. "When we used Edgebrook Covenant Church, we could only use the building Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. Now we can use our building all day and I have my own office."
Attendance has averaged about 70, said Chung, who has been pastor for 10 years. The new building and the Sunday morning worship opportunities have already had a noticeable impact in attracting more visitors, he observed. The church hopes to increase its ministry by hiring a part-time high school youth director. Those interested in the church or in the youth director position can contact Chung at 847-298-4141.
