Vikings Top North Central With Last-Second Shot

CHICAGO, IL (February 21, 2001) - Rob Berki scored with one second left in regulation play to lift the North Park University (NPU) men's basketball team to an 80-78 victory over North Central College Wednesday night at NPU.

The Vikings had blown a 14-point lead before Berki's heroics. Berki finished with a team-high 21 points to help his team move to 13-11 overall, 4-9 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.

North Central (8-16, 2-11) trailed 77-63 with three minutes left, but Yulander Wells scored nine points in a 2:17 span, the final three on a long jump shot with 43 seconds remaining, to tie the game at 78-all. Wells had 25 points to lead all scorers.

Jason Collins and Brandon Donaldson each missed shots in the final 12 seconds before Peterson pulled down a rebound and fed Berki for the winning points. Peterson had 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for the Vikings, winners of three straight.

Berki and Peterson had 11 points each at halftime, but the Vikings trailed 37-36 after the Cardinals finished the first half with a 12-1 spurt. After the two teams exchanged leads for the first five minutes of the second half, Collins and reserve Byron Pullen put NPU ahead to stay by combining for 12 points in a 2:15 span. Collins and Pullen had 16 points apiece.
