Services Held for Retired Missionary Myrtle Larson

SAVONBURG, KS (January 3, 2002) - Funeral services for retired Covenant missionary Myrtle Larson were held Monday. She died December 27.

Larson, 87, was commissioned for missionary service in 1945 and left a year later for Zaire, where she served primarily at the Girls' Primary School at Karawa. She served as director until 1959. She taught at the school until 1974. She was also a housemother and counselor in dormitory housing for about 50 students.

In 1975, Larson became principal of the Lycee Mobonga, a new secondary school for girls in Gemena. Before retiring in 1980, she received the Gold Medal of Civic Merit in Zaire, awarded to those serving 25 years or more in service to the country. Even in retirement, Larson couldn't keep her mind off Zaire - she returned there from 1982-84 as a short-term missionary.

Born July 26, 1914, in LaHarpe, Kansas, Larson attended North Park Junior College and Moody Bible Institute, both in Chicago, before heading to the mission field. She was a longtime resident of Savonburg and was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Savonburg.
