Pacific Southwest Conference to Mark 100th Anniversary

CONCORD, CA (January 6, 2002) - Three February hymn fest celebrations will begin a series of events designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

The hymn fests will take place the weekend of February 22-24, according to conference Supt. Evelyn M. R. Johnson.

Colony Covenant Church in Kingsburg, California, will host a hymn fest at 7 p.m. February 22. Colony Covenant was previously named Riverside Covenant. That church hosted the first conference meeting in 1902 along with five other California churches.

Pasadena Covenant Church will host a hymn fest in southern California at 7 p.m., February 23. First Covenant, Oakland, will host a hymn fest at 4:30 p.m., February 24. The guest leader for these events will be Robert C. Dvorak, superintendent of the East Coast Conference. Dvorak is the founder of the Brown Hymnal Society, a unique hymn singing series that is well known throughout the denomination, originating during his ministry at Winnetka Covenant Church in the Chicago area.

The Pacific Southwest Conference will formally celebrate its centennial during the PSWC Celebration 2002 April 25-27 at NewSong Community Church in Irvine, California. The annual meeting is entitled "Live the Call" and will include noted preacher and writer Leonard Sweet, a speaker at last year's ECC Midwinter Conference. Ray Johnston, pastor of Bayside Covenant Church in Granite Bay, California, will host a leadership event April 26.

Other leadership events will include those for church planters, youth pastors, children's ministers and those involved with Hispanic ministries. Covenant Women Ministries will also host a luncheon. Brenda Salter McNeil, co-founder and president of Overflow Ministries in Chicago, will preach at the closing service of the annual meeting. She will speak at this year's Midwinter Conference in Rosemont, Illinois.
