North Park Vikings Overwhelm Judson College
CHICAGO, IL (January 8, 2002) - Tyrone Hueston scored a game-high 18 points and added seven assists as North Park University (NPU) improved to 5-5 with a 74-66 nonleague men's basketball victory over Judson College Monday night.
Hueston's offense helped the Vikings offset the loss of top scorer Maurice Vaughn and top rebounder Irving Richardson. Neither dressed for Tuesday's contest. Jason Collins pitched in with 13 points and nine rebounds for NPU, which forced 19 Judson turnovers.
NPU made just 10-of-31 field goal tries in the first half and trailed 34-27 at intermission. The Vikings recovered nicely however, scoring 18 of the first 22 points in the opening moments of the second half, including 13 straight. Reserve Byron Pullen scored six of his 10 points during the 13-0 spurt and NPU's defense kept Judson scoreless for 5:23.
Judson (10-7) made a comeback and took a 54-53 lead with about nine minutes left, but Jerome Burton's lay-up put the Vikings ahead for good, 55-54, with 8:19 remaining and NPU went on a 6-0 run to give itself some breathing room. The Vikings needed it - they made eight foul shots in
the final 2:14 as the Eagles made a late run before two players fouled out.
Dan Matlak scored 14 points to lead Judson, but had just four in the second half. Scott Fortune added 13 points off the bench for the Eagles while Rick Williams had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Aaron Coleman gave North Park a big boost inside with 12 points and seven rebounds in a reserve role.
NPU travels to Crawfordsville, Indiana, for a nonleague game at Wabash College Wednesday. The Vikings play at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, to begin their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin portion of the schedule.
