New Brighton Covenanter Wins Olympic Team Spot

NEW BRIGHTON, MN (January 14, 2002) - Amy Sannes of Salem Covenant Church earned her second berth on the U.S. Olympic speed skating team by qualifying in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500-meter long track speed skating races.

Sannes of St. Paul, Minnesota, made the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and placed 26th in the 500-meter long track event. In December, the twenty-four-year old won the U.S. Olympic trials in the women's 1,000-meter race, beating Chris Witty, who had won a silver medal in the 1,000-meter event at Nagano.

A year ago, Sannes was the 26th ranked skater in the World Cup rankings in the 500-meter long track standings. She placed eighth in the 1,000-meter rankings.
