Cameroon School Needs Teachers, Hostel Parents

CAMEROON (January 16, 2002) - Hostel parents and numerous teachers for the 2002-03 school year are needed at Rain Forest International School (RFIS) in Yaounde, Cameroon, a city of about 800,000.

Needs include:

  • One individual to teach Bible, English and Social Studies for grades 7-8
  • Teachers for grades 9-12 who can teach one or more courses, including: biology, chemistry, physics, English, French, mathematics, social studies (geography, world history, U.S. history, comparative government), living skills (food, clothing, money management), industrial arts (including electronics, woodworking) and visual arts (including painting, drawing, photography).

Also needed are full-time hostel parents (requires at least a two-year commitment) and a part-time business administrator who might supplement administrative work with some teaching. A French-speaking applicant is preferred, but is not necessary for teaching. Teachers are required to stay at least one year to ensure continuity with classes. Retired teachers and teachers taking sabbaticals are considered excellent candidates for teaching at the school, which was started by the Wycliffe Bible Translator's international organization, SIL, in 1991.

Covenant missionaries have used Rain Forest as a primary school in Africa since 1997. Recently, Covenant World Mission and the Evangelical Free Church Mission (EFCM) decided to partner in the operation of both the school and a hostel for children of missionaries living in other countries (12 students per hostel).

The school provides an international English-based education to a diverse student body. This year there are 78 students in grades 7-12 representing 13 nationalities and six countries in which their parents work. The majority of the students are missionary children, but there are other expatriates from embassies or businesses. About 20 percent of the student body is Cameroonian.
