Vikings Upset North Central College
CHICAGO, IL (January 24, 2002) - The North Park University (NPU) men's basketball team has reached the upper echelon of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) - and on Saturday, the Vikings have a chance to rise to the top.
Freshman Maurice Vaughn's two foul shots with 1:05 left in overtime were the difference as host North Park University (NPU) beat North Central College 77-73 Wednesday night to move to 8-7 overall, 3-1 in CCIW play. The Vikings will host Carthage College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in a battle for first place in the CCIW. Conference leader Carthage is 15-1, 4-1 in CCIW contests, after beating Augustana 63-62 Wednesday. It is ranked second in the latest d3hoops.com

Vaughn scored 28 points (his collegiate best) to go with 10 rebounds while Sneed Deaderick and Larry Moore added 10 points apiece. Moore also had 12 rebounds. North Central fell to 5-12, 1-5 in conference despite 17 points by Bill Stang and 14 points by Kevin Lambert.
After Vaughn's foul shots, Moore made a free throw with 25 seconds left in the extra period to extend North Park's lead to 75-73. Nick Marsh had a chance to tie the game for North Central, but missed a jump shot with four seconds remaining. Byron Pullen's two foul shots with one second
left gave North Park its final margin.
Lambert made a basket with 2:52 in regulation play to send the game into overtime tied at 66-all. North Park led 52-40 with 12:52 left in regulation on three Vaughn free throws, but North Central recovered with an 18-6 run to tie the contest 58-58 and the game stayed close thereafter.
