Allan Folmar Receives Presidential Points of Light Award
RENTON, WA (January 25, 2002) - Allan Folmar of Newport Covenant Church has been given the President's Points of Light Award to honor longtime community service to Washington's King County.
Folmar, a licensed Covenant pastor from Renton, was recognized on www.pointsoflight.org as the Daily Points of Light honoree January 18. Each day Points of Light features an individual or group whose volunteer work has made a difference.
Now retired from Boeing and serving as a full-time volunteer chaplain with Seattle area fire and police districts, Folmar was nominated for the award by his previous employer, the Boeing Company. Boeing had awarded Folmar its William M. Allen Award for his volunteer work in the
community before nominating him for Points of Light.
The opening paragraph of Folmar's profile on January 18 reads as follows: "During the past 11 years, Allan Folmar has spent every Friday night dedicated to the homeless youth population in King County. He has worked with homeless children and teens, providing them with food, blankets and referrals to other agencies, friendship and counseling. He has also been a volunteer chaplain with the county's sheriff's office, as well as with the Renton Police and Fire Departments, the Tukwila Police and Fire Departments, King County Fire District 20 Fire Department, Boeing Fire Department and the Sea-Tac Airport Disaster Response Team. There, he aids victims and survivors of accident and crime scenes, provides care and comfort to families of people who have just died, makes difficult death notifications to families, diffuses confrontations and counsels law enforcement and fire personnel."
Folmar also works with the Fisherman's Club, which had been incorporated with the Seattle Union Gospel Mission until recently. He has also been on numerous church boards and has been involved in youth and Sunday school ministries at Newport Covenant. Newport Covenant pastor Howard Burgoyne describes Folmar as "a servant of Christ who loves people. He's got a gift for mercy and a compassion for people who are hurting."
