'Doing Church' Weekend at Crossroads Covenant
CONCORD, CA (February 4, 2002) - Crossroads Covenant Church in Concord will host "Doing Church," April 19-20, an event for Northern California church leaders coordinated by the Renewal Project.
Brian McLaren, pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church near Washington, D.C., and a noted author, will be the guest speaker. He will lead seminars entitled Understanding the Postmodern Transition, Making Disciples in
an Age of Transition, and Discerning the Stages of Faith Development.
McLaren wrote The Church on the Other Side: Doing Ministry in the Postmodern Matrix (1998), which has been recognized as a primary portal into the current conversation about postmodern ministry.
His second book, Finding Faith" (1999), is written for thoughtful seekers and skeptics of the church. His third book, A New Kind of Christian (2001) further explores issues of faith inside and beyond a traditional church context. His most recent work, More Ready Than You Realize, a volume on evangelism, is scheduled for release in the coming
months.
"Brian has been active in networking pastors for many years and has assisted in the planting and development of a number of new churches," said Renewal Project Executive Director Doug Stevens, an ordained Covenant minister. "He is a popular speaker for campus groups and retreats and a frequent lecturer at seminaries and conferences, nationally and internationally."
Kelly Ballard, associate pastor of worship and the Arts at University Covenant Church in Davis, California, will lead worship at the "Doing Church" weekend. Ballard is an associate with The Renewal Project, which hosted its initial "Doing Church" weekend with Dr. George Hunter as the
keynote speaker. Last year's event drew 200 church leaders from 30 congregations.
The Renewal Project, Inc., based in Walnut Creek, California, is a non-profit religious organization dedicated to the revitalization of local churches.
