Memorial Service Wednesday for Theodore Franklin
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (February 11, 2002) - A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday for retired Evangelical Covenant Church pastor Theodore Franklin who died Friday at Covenant Manor retirement center.
The service will be conducted in the Fellowship Center at Covenant Manor, 5800 St. Croix Ave., Golden Valley, Minnesota. Franklin was 82.
The son of Nathaniel and Lillian Franklin, he received his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota following two years at North Park College (now University). He received a Master of Divinity Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and completed postgraduate studies at the Hartford Seminary Foundation.
He was ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1950 and thereafter served at Salem Square Covenant Church in Worchester, Massachusetts; Margarita Union Church in Margarita, the Canal Zone; and Bethesda Evangelical Covenant Church in Rockford, Illinois. He later served as a consultant for Covenant Retirement Communities.
Franklin's father for many years directed the denomination's department of Christian education. Franklin was baptized as an infant by his grandfather and was confirmed in the Willmar Covenant Church. His spiritual pilgrimage led him eventually to seminary, which he described as a "growing experience" where he learned "what salvation by grace meant in its fullness."
Franklin is survived by his wife, Marion; two daughters, Deborah Jean Bell and Sharon Franklin Driscoll; three sons, Stephen Theodore, Matthew Erik and Peter Karl; four sisters and 12 grandchildren.
Memorials should be directed to the Theodore E. and Marion V. Franklin Scholarship Fund at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago or to Roseville Covenant Church in Roseville.
