Carthage Upsets Vikings in Conference Play
KENOSHA, WI (February 12, 2002) - Top-ranked Carthage College shot nearly 59 percent from the field in beating visiting North Park University (NPU) 74-59 Monday night.
The Redmen are 21-1, 10-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. They are rated first in the latest d3hoops.com poll. NPU fell to 10-11, 5-5 in the CCIW.
Lamar Townsend led the Vikings with 15 points while Javier Sanchez added 13. Carthage took a 34-16 lead with 3:46 left in the half and North Park got no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Two nights earlier, host North Park broke open a close game late in the first half to beat Illinois Wesleyan University 68-55 as Townsend led the Vikings in scoring with 15 points.
Marty Eich put the visitors ahead 16-12 with a layup at the 10:54 mark of the opening half, but NPU went on a 21-4 run in the next 10:30 to take a 33-20 halftime lead over the Titans. Illinois Wesleyan got no closer than five points thereafter.
