Vikings: Men Edge Millikin, Women Lose to Augustana
CHICAGO, IL (February 17, 2002) - Jason Collins scored 13 points and North Park University (NPU) broke open a tie game with a 5-0 run late in the game to beat visiting Millikin University 69-60 Saturday.
With 7:07 remaining, Millikin's Mike Dunn tied the game 56-56 with a 3-point basket, but the Vikings used a Byron Pullen free throw, a Larry Moore layup and two Javier Sanchez foul shots to take the lead for good, 61-56. With the win, the Vikings moved to 11-12, 6-6 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. Millikin fell to 8-15, 3-9.
Sneed Deaderick scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half to put NPU ahead 41-31. Moore led the Vikings in rebounds with nine and made 5-of-6 field goal attempts. He and Lamar Townsend added 10 points apiece.
The NPU men's basketball team travels to Wheaton College for a 7:30 p.m. conference game Wednesday before finishing the season with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Elmhurst College.
NPU's women's basketball team lost at Augustana College Saturday afternoon 65-56 despite 21 points by Heather Fitzgerald and 12 points and 10 rebounds by Carrie Swenson.
Andrea Mendyk had just seven points, but moved ahead of Gina Hornbaker into fourth place on the Vikings' career scoring list. Mendyk has 1,195 points in her four-year career, four points ahead of Hornbaker (1,191). Earlier in the week, she passed Rebecca (Johnson) Djurickovic (1,180) in career scoring.
The women's team, 8-15 overall, 2-10 in conference play, will play a 7:30 p.m. contest Tuesday at Carthage College. The women Vikings finish their season by hosting Illinois Wesleyan University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
