Washington Covenanter Wins State High School Wrestling Title

TACOMA, WA (February 20, 2002) - South Kitnap High School senior Derek Kipperberg, of Covenant Fellowship in Port Orchard, won the Washington state 4A wrestling championship in the 119-pound weight class Saturday, beating Kiamiakin High's Tyler Sherfey 8-3 in the final.

The win was part of a full day of activities at the Tacoma Dome, site of the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association's Mat Classic XIV. Kipperberg, fourth in state a year ago at the 112-pound weight class, had lost in regionals before going unbeaten at the Mat Classic meet. He overcame a broken hand earlier this season.

Kipperberg had edged Rogers-Puyallup's Brett Wagner 10-9 in the semifinals after winning his first two matches easily last weekend. Brother Micah, a sophomore, also wrestles for South Kitsap. He made the Mat Classic XIV at 112 pounds, but lost his two matches at the state meet.
