Youth's Active High School Life Centered on Faith
RAINY RIVER, MN (March 2, 2002) - Shauna McInerney has shown the versatility of her talents in the United States and Canada, in drama, song and sprints while managing to make Jesus Christ a priority in her active life.
An active member of her youth group at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Rainy River, she uses her gifts in a variety of ways. This winter, she is a cast member for Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat for a playhouse in Baudette, Minnesota, just a few miles away.
Last November, the Rainy River High School senior played the lead role when the cast and crew of Owl Theatre's Diary of Anne Frank pulled off three performances in the Rainy River High School Auditorium. McInerney's performance drew rave reviews from the local weekly newspaper, the Rainy River Record. McInerney is a noted singer in her high school, having won last year's talent show.
McInerney played basketball for her high school team last fall. During the school year, she plays two sports for two different high schools.
"She's very involved with youth group and is very outgoing and athletic," said Mark Mast, who co-pastors the Evangelical Covenant Church of Rainy River. "She's vibrant in her faith and is very gifted musically and vocally, too. She's a gem."
Last spring, McInerney ran the sprint events and performed in the long jump at the high school level. She posted a state qualifying time in the 200-meter dash during sectional preliminaries for Lake of the Woods High School. Last summer, she competed in a Canadian junior national meet while representing Ontario on a sprint relay team.
"She (McInerney) is a very focused young lady - if she was going to do something she was going to do well or not do it," said Coach Brian Novak.
A number of other youth in local Covenant churches were also busy making headlines in their own communities:
- Chicago - At Ravenswood Evangelical Covenant Church, Kayla and Miriah
Yurick had a combined 29 inches of their hair cut off recently and donated the hair to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for children and adults who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.
- Dawson, Minnesota - Jenna Thompson of Dawson Covenant Church will represent her state as a National Scholar at the National Young Leaders Conference and the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense. The two March events are in Washington, D.C. A junior at Dawson-Boyd High School, Jenna is involved in numerous extracurricular activities such as
band, orchestra choir, and another singing group. She is the daughter of Jeff and Ardyce Thompson.
- Chicago - Nick Bruckner of Edgebrook Covenant Church in Chicago will serve as a
congressional page while continuing his high school education in the Washington D.C. area. Bruckner is a junior at Northside College Prep High School.
- Attleboro, Massachusetts - Seven high school students became members at the Evangelical Covenant Church. They include Carl Larson, Kaitlin McCluskey, Heather McEvoy, Kent Pigeon, Jenna Ranker, Ashley Root and Jared Trenholm. Pigeon and Trenholm, both freshmen band members at Attleboro High School, use their talents as sound technicians at the church. Larson, a junior at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High, also helps as a sound technician and plays in school bands. Root, a freshman at North Attleboro High, is in theater at her high school. McEvoy, also a
freshman at North Attleboro, participates on the color guard at school.
