Minnesota Groups Assists HCRI Radio in Ecuador
SHELL, ECUADOR (March 8, 2002) - Bloomington Covenant Church in Bloomington, Minnesota, sent 16 participants on a mission trip to Shell February 22 through March 4 to assist HCRI radio in Ecuador.
The group, led by associate pastor Brad Shannon, worked primarily on refurbishing HCRI, a Covenant radio station sponsored by Confederacion de Iglesias del Pacto Evangelico (CIPE). They built sound panels for the building, and did other tasks including plumbing, fencing and installing doorknobs and locks on various rooms.
Group members included Shannon, Floyd and Marge Anderson, Darrell and Agnes Steen, Bob and Dianna Dronen, Laura and Peggy Erickson, Julie Person, Karna Anderson, Karna Larson, Donna Moffett, Brook Bauer, Edwin Smith and Peter Wellumson.
HCRI began operations in 1984 through a Swedish missionary in Santa Rosa, Ecuador, a small village located in a jungle area. In 1987, HCRI broke the news of a major earthquake in Santa Rosa, according to Covenant missionary Herb Clauson.
Shannon said the radio station recently moved its operations to Shell to serve a broader audience. The radio station primarily broadcasts Christian radio, although it has some community programming. HCRI is integrated with CIPE's community development arm.
"People are touched on an individual basis and on a group level and it expands your view of Christ's mission and God's work around the world," said Shannon, who had taken a mission trip to Ecuador when he was a student at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago. "You come back blessed more than you could ever imagine.
"Kids from our Pioneer Club had made presents for kids in Shell (before the trip) and to see those kids receive the gifts and for their leaders to give the Bible message was encouraging," Shannon continued. "And, for our group, taking communion at a Covenant church in Quito (La Iglesia del Pacto en la Jipijapa) brought a great sense of being one body with them. We received their warmth and grace and it was great to see the faith of people with much less (financially) than we had."
The Bloomington Covenant contingent raised $5,000 through a spaghetti luncheon and other events. Some of the funds were used for project supplies.
