Covenanter Wins Illinois Primary for Lieutenant Governor
CHICAGO, IL (March 20, 2002) - Carl Hawkinson of the Covenant Church of Galesburg won the Republican nomination for Illinois lieutenant governor in Tuesday's statewide election, receiving 47 percent of the votes to defeat Bill O'Connor of Riverside.
A graduate of North Park College (now University) and Harvard Law School, Hawkinson was endorsed by Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan, who defeated two opponents to win the Republican nomination for governor. In November, Ryan and Hawkinson will face the Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rod Blagojevich and the Democratic lieutenant governor nominee Pat Quinn.
During the past 14 years, the 54-year-old Hawkinson has represented the six-county 47th State Senate District, chairing the chamber's Judiciary Committee and serving on two other committees. Hawkinson previously served the 94th District in the Illinois House of Representatives (1983-87). He has served as chair and vice chair of his church and is now part of the church diaconate.
