Alaskan Finishes 36th in Iditarod Dogsled Race

NOME, AK (March 21, 2002) - Palmer Sagoonick, who grew up at the Shaktoolik Covenant Church in Shaktoolik, placed 36th in the internationally renowned Iditarod dogsled race.

Sagoonick, a commercial fisherman and big game guide, navigated the 1,161-mile trip from Anchorage to Nome in 11 days, 20 hours, 50 minutes, 54 seconds. Sagoonick finished nearly 37 hours faster than his time in the 2001 race, when he placed 45th. Martin Buser took 8 days, 22 hours, 46 minutes, 2 seconds to win this year's event.

Sagoonick's cousin, Ernest, has been pastor at Shaktoolik Covenant Church, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary as a congregation this year, according to the latest Covenant Yearbook.
