Baseball Vikings Overpower Robert Morris College
CHICAGO, IL (March 25, 2002) - Will Wittleder and Dan Gutierrez had three hits apiece as North Park University (NPU) broke open a close game with four runs in the fourth inning to beat Robert Morris College 13-4 in the first of two games at Hedstrand Field Saturday.
Robert Morris took the second game 15-3, dropping NPU to 2-10 on the season. The Vikings host Benedictine College in a nonleague game at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. NPU then hosts Carthage College in a noon doubleheader Friday to start the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season.
Jeff Hanson of Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek, California, got the win in game one, moving to 1-2 on the season by tossing a complete game and striking out nine. The sophomore right-hander has fanned 18 in 20 innings this season.
Hanson got plenty of help from his offense, which had 14 hits. Nick Zayas keyed a four-run second inning with a two-run single and a two-run single by Wittleder highlighted a four-run fourth inning. The Vikings blew open the game in the fifth inning, scoring five times as Jason Morgan had a two-run single.
In game two, Gutierrez had three hits and Kevin Carroll went 3-for-3 at the plate, but Robert Morris scored three times in the first inning and five more in the third to earn the doubleheader split. Gutierrez is hitting .400 so far for NPU while Carroll is batting .350. Morgan has 11 runs batted in to pace the Vikings.
