Missouri Church Attracts 744 to Grand Opening
LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (March 25, 2002) - Deerbrook Covenant Church enjoyed its grand opening service Sunday in a $1.5 million building that has been used for worship services since March 3.
Rick Mylander, associate superintendent of the Midwest Conference, was a special guest with 744 attending worship services.
Deerbrook Covenant was founded in 1995 under current senior pastor Gary Schmitz. The church is located in a suburb of 80,000 near Kansas City. It is an offspring of Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, Kansas.
Complete with a carpeted multipurpose room and state-of-the-art lighting and sound system technology, the new building is considered a blessing from God. The church has been averaging 580 in combined worship attendance at two services. During the first two Sundays in March, however, Deerbrook Covenant attracted 710 and 711 people respectively. On March 17, the official dedication of the 17,000-square-foot building had an attendance of 639. For at least one Deerbrook parishioner, the building project has been a labor of love.
"It is an awesome building and I was honored to serve my Lord in this capacity," said building team leader Bill Luster. "If he asked me to serve again to his Glory, I would do it in a minute. With seating for over 500, we have some room to grow. The children's classrooms, youth
area and coffee shop area have all been big hits with the congregation. The function of the building is also very good."
