New Oregon Congregation Begins Weekly Service Schedule
BEND, OR (April 3, 2002) - Cascade Covenant Church in central Oregon begins
its weekly worship service schedule following a successful and final
preview service on Easter Sunday with 127 in attendance.
Eighty-five people attended the first preview service January 13,
according to Alan Petrich, who moved to Bend last June to start the
church. A second preview service in February had an attendance of 97.
Cascade Covenant Church is nearly three hours from the nearest Covenant
church in a town of 55,000 people. Despite not having the benefit of an
area Covenant congregation to provide support, Petrich said his core
group has worked hard to make inroads in the community. The results were
evident last week - Petrich estimates about 40 people visited the church
for the first time.
Petrich, who had worked for a short time as vice president of the
Burlington, Vermont-based Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, added that the
church has initiated weekly youth ministry programming and small group
Bible study groups. Associate Pastor Scott Johnson has developed a youth
ministry team and more than a dozen teens are involved in the church's
activities.
"We're pleased so far and we're praying that it keeps going," said
Petrich. "Our core group is terribly excited. Four months ago, we were
20 people and six months ago it was just me and (wife) Lori."
