North Park Softball Splits Double-Header with Carthage
SKOKIE, IL (April 5, 2002) - The North Park University (NPU) softball team
earned a split in a doubleheader with Carthage College Wednesday,
winning game one 6-5 and losing the second game 8-0.
The Vikings opened the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin
(CCIW) season in a big way, scoring five runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning to win game one. Run-scoring singles by Kim Walker, Allie
Milner and Alex Urgo, an RBI fielder's choice by Heather Fitzgerald and
a bases-loaded walk from Katie Ritti were instrumental in NPU's
game-winning rally.
In game two, Carthage pitcher Amanda Leitzen tossed a no-hitter as her
team scored four runs in the third and fifth innings.
North Park set a school record with a 19-14-2 mark last year and the
Vikings may record more victories this year if recent play is an
indicator. NPU has taken seven of 10 home games after a 4-7 mark at the
Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida, during mid-March.
Walker, last year's conference player of the year, was hitting .426
entering the Carthage contest and also led the team with four homers.
Milner was hitting .375 and Fitzgerald thrown out 13 of 23 base runners
from her position as catcher.
