Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Focus of Dialogue
CHICAGO, IL (April 24, 2002) - Former Israeli parliamentarian Shulamit Aloni and
Palestinian official representative in France
Leila Shahid will present "Negotiating A Just Peace in Israel and
Palestine: The Tough Issues" on Monday, April 29, in Anderson Chapel on the
campus of North Park University.
Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, formerly scheduled to participate in this event, is no
longer able to take part in the discussion, a university spokesperson said.
The 7:30 p.m. event is free and open to the public. The sponsor for the
dialogue is North Park's Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
Aloni is a teacher, lawyer and journalist. During the War of Independence,
Aloni participated in the defense of Jerusalem and was taken captive by
Jordanian forces in the Old City. She worked as a columnist for several
newspapers and published books on political and legal subjects. She also
founded the Israel Consumers Council, which she chaired for four years. Her
work in the civil rights movement in Israel includes the Mapam (United
Workers Party) and Shinui (Center Party).
Shahid has served as the Palestinian official representative in France
since 1993. She is the only woman "ambassador" for the Palestinian
Authority. Her diplomatic career includes serving as the PLO representative
in Ireland in 1989, and later as the Palestinian representative in the
Netherlands and Denmark. Born in Beirut in 1949, Shahid grew up with her
two sisters in exile in Lebanon. After her studies in Beirut, she worked in
the Palestinian refugee camps until 1974 when she began her doctorate in
anthropology in Paris.
