California Senior Among Top Shot Put Athletes
WALNUT, CA (April 25, 2002) - Senior Noah Bryant of Montecito Covenant Church in
Santa Barbara, California, has emerged as one of the top high school shot
put throwers in the United States, placing first in the nationally known
Mt. SAC Invitational Track and Field meet at Mt. San Antonio College last
Saturday.
A student at Carpinteria High School, Bryant tossed the shot put 62 feet, 7
inches at Mt. SAC, an event that includes competitors from all over the
United States. A week earlier, at the Arcadia Invitational, he had a
first-place toss of 65-11, easily beating Jon Howard of Arroyo Grande
(61-9.5).
Bryant currently has the top mark in California among high school
competitors during the outdoor track and field season. He was rated third
in the U.S. after the indoor season. His 63-8.75 toss at the Nike Indoor
Classic in Landover, Maryland, in March, placed him second behind the 66-6
toss of Glenn DiGiorgio of Bayonne, New Jersey. Kevin Bookout of Stroud,
Oklahoma, had tossed the shot 66-3.75 at another competition during the
indoor season.
Last spring, Bryant placed third in the California Interscholastic
Federation state championship shot put competition and was fifth at the
Golden West Invitational in Sacramento, California. Later that summer, he
was eighth in the United States Track and Field Junior Championships
in Virginia.
Besides his track and field efforts, Bryant has been an All-Section lineman
for his school's football team. He has been considered for track and field
scholarships at such track and field powers as UCLA, USC, Arizona, Kentucky
and Missouri, among others.
