Covenant Chaplain Nominated for Top Chaplain Honor
SEMBAWANG, Singapore (April 26, 2002) - Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Saville, a chaplain in
the Logistics Group Western Pacific, is the Pacific Fleet nominee for the
Military Chaplains Association's "Navy Chaplain of the Year" award.
Saville, a Covenanter, was named the Pacific Fleet chaplain of the year in
2001 for the way in which he has helped foster a service mentality with
Logistics Group Western Pacific. The command unit has taken top honors for
community service in its area for three straight years, according to a Navy
News Service report.
The Community Relations Program run by his office won a Navy-wide
competition called the "Good Neighbor Flagship Award" for small overseas
commands. Saville said that the program coordinates "nearly 2,000 sailors
and Marines passing through Singapore to perform more than 8,000 hours of
volunteer work with approximately 1,500 disadvantaged children and elderly
folk."
Saville has served in the Navy since 1992, with stops in Mississippi,
London and San Diego. He was ordained by the Covenant in 1989 after earning
a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena,
California. His home church is Bethesda Covenant Church in New York.
