Bergstrom Carlson Joins Central Conference Team
WILMETTE, IL (May 7, 2002) - The Central Conference Executive Board has called
Jolene Bergstrom Carlson to be conference associate superintendent. She was
installed during the Central Conference Annual Meeting this past weekend at
Winnetka Covenant Church.
Bergstrom Carlson, an associate pastor at North Park Covenant Church in
Chicago since 1995, accepted the position last month. She will spend much
of her time in church planting and church revitalization. She will replace
Craig Anderson, who retired after 14 years as conference associate
superintendent. Anderson was honored at a dinner Friday evening.
An ordained Covenant pastor, Bergstrom Carlson was pastor at Douglas Park
Covenant Church in Chicago for a decade before becoming North Park
Covenant's associate pastor. Born in Red Oak, Iowa, she grew up at Stanton
Covenant Church in nearby Stanton. She earned undergraduate and Masters
degrees (speech communication and theater arts) from the University of
Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.
Bergstrom Carlson served for two decades in various instructor and
consultant roles at the college level, working at three Chicago area
colleges. During that time, she served as a curriculum developer for
Covenant Women Ministries (CWM) and later led CWM Triennial workshops. She
became pastor at Douglas Park Covenant while attending both Bethany
Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois, and North Park Theological
Seminary.
Community involvement and advocacy issues have been a hallmark of the
ministry of Bergstrom Carlson. She has worked for Lawndale's Habitat for
Humanity, the Lawndale Coalition of Christian Leaders, the Little Village
Neighborhood Housing Service, Latino Youth and the Community Policing
Program while aiding various block club organizations. She has also been on
local Parent Teacher Association boards and developed parenting seminars
and leadership training for a coordinated child abuse program with the Cook
County Sheriff's Department.
She has been active not only with conference ministries, but also those of
the Evangelical Covenant Church, serving on the board for Hispanic
Ministries, the Social Justice Committee and as a participant in the
Consultation on City Ministry. She currently serves on the board for
Chicago-based Wellspring Ministry, which aids those victimized by domestic
violence.
Bergstrom Carlson is married to North Park Theological Seminary Professor
of Ministry Richard Carlson. Longtime residents of Oak Park, Illinois, they
have three grown children.
