Numerous Teachers Honored for Contributions
CHICAGO, IL (May 10, 2002) - A number of teachers and teaching assistants
affiliated with Evangelical Covenant churches received have recently been
honored for their work.
In the Central Conference, Tim Braun of Broadway Covenant Church in
Rockford, Illinois, received the Golden Apple Award through the Rockford
School District for teaching excellence. Braun is the music director at the
church.
Curt Pinley, who grew up at Trinity Covenant Church in Oak Lawn, Illinois,
and has been attending Hope Evangelical Covenant Church in Crystal Lake,
Illinois, was named to the Who's Who of American High School
Teachers. He works as an art teacher and coaches the volleyball
programs at Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois.
Donna Howe of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Paxton, Illinois, earned
the Extra Mile Award by her local newspaper for her volunteer work at Clara
Peterson Grade School and at her church. Howe has coordinated a
"before-school" reading program at the school, recruiting volunteers and
pairing them with various students. She also serves as assistant
superintendent at the church and is a Sunday school teacher.
In the Midwest Conference, Gary Carlson of Brantford Covenant Church in
Clyde, Kansas, was named Teacher of the Year by the Clifton-Clyde teachers.
Carlson has taught industrial arts at Clifton-Clyde High School for the
past 14 years while coaching football and track and field. He had
previously attended Clifton High as a teen before earning his undergraduate
degree from Fort Hays State.
In the Southeast Conference, Rock Doddridge was named Teacher of the Year
at Asheville Community College in Asheville, North Carolina. Doddridge, an
ordained Covenant pastor, recently served at Faith Covenant Church in St.
Petersburg, Florida.
Cyndy Miericke was featured as Teacher of the Week in the Orlando
Sentinel newspaper in Orlando, Florida. Miericke is a Spanish teacher
at Oviedo High School. Husband, Kurt, is superintendent of the Southeast
Conference.
