Minnehaha, South Korean School Develop New Relationship
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (May 25, 2002) - Minnehaha Academy recently inaugurated a sister
school relationship between Minnehaha Academy and a school in South Korea
with representatives from both schools celebrating the event recently at
Minnehaha's south campus.
Three officials from Daeje School of Jacheon, Korea, traveled to Minnesota
to take part in the celebration, including Principal Yong Gil Kwak and
school board members Eun Jung Kim and Byeong Hwa Woo. Dean Erickson, Middle
School principal, signed the agreement for Minnehaha. Minnehaha student
Sora Oh, a native of Korea, served as translator. An exchange of gifts
closed the ceremonies.
The sister school program was launched under the leadership of Wendell
Carlson, who in addition to his duties in the Minnehaha counselor's office,
serves as the school's director of international exchange. Wendell and his
wife, Grace, visited Daeje School last November to bring greetings from
Minnehaha and to discuss plans for the cooperative
agreement.
Daeje School is located two hours south of Seoul. The international
connection provides opportunities for American and Korean students to learn
about each other's language, culture, history, foods and sports. It is
anticipated that the internet will play a major role in communication
between the two schools, opening the way for teachers to share curriculum,
classes to share news and students to make friends. Student exchanges will
also be discussed.
Minnehaha Academy is sponsored by the Northwest Conference of the
Evangelical Covenant Church. Founded in 1913, its mission is to provide a
high quality education integrating Christian faith and learning.
Minnehaha's combined enrollment of 1,250 (preschool through grade 12) on
three campuses includes students from more than 50 metropolitan
communities.
