Covenanter Leading Ethiopian Economic Development Effort
ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA (May 30, 2002) - Wilson "Bill" Hunt Jr. of Winnetka
Covenant Church in Wilmette, Illinois, is scheduled to meet today with U.S.
Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and U2's Bono to discuss the African Growth
and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
Hunt is president and owner of CHAMPRO Sports Equipment, a product line of
Wilson Hunt International Ltd., based in Skokie. Today's meeting will occur
at Garment Express, an Ethiopian-American joint venture factory where
CHAMPRO manufactures athletic uniforms. CNN will tape the meeting,
according to CHAMPRO spokesperson Pam Berg.
Hunt has long been an advocate for Ethiopia, having served in the Peace
Corps there following college. He was recently elected chair of the
Ethiopian American Trade and Investment Council (EATIC), which assists in
economic development by promoting and facilitating investment in Ethiopia.
It is organizing a trade delegation of American
executives to Ethiopia in September.
Garment Express is the first company in Africa to manufacture sports
uniforms for export to the United States and was the first manufacturer in
Ethiopia to take advantage of the benefits offered by AGOA. Garment Express
manufactures baseball, basketball and football uniforms under CHAMPRO and
United Athletic labels for export to the U.S.
O'Neill and Bono have been touring various sites during a four-nation tour
of Africa. Bono, a noted activist and an internationally known musician for
U2, found out about Garment Express through one of his philanthropic
contacts.
