MANISTEE, MI (May 31, 2002) - A funeral service will be conducted tomorrow for Dr. Carl Hobart Edgren, well-known in the North Park community in Chicago for his lengthy association with North Park University.

A memorial service also has been planned for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at North Park Covenant Church in Chicago where the Edgrens were members prior to their retirement and move to Michigan.

He held a high standard for teaching and was proud of his Swedish heritage, as evidenced by his many years of teaching at North Park College and a lifetime of membership in the Evangelical Covenant Church. He was a member of the Swedish-American Historical Society and was instrumental in beginning the Swedish exchange program at North Park College. In 1982 he was the chairman of the committee for the celebration of the visit to North Park College of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

He is remembered for his scholarly work - he was the author of a published book and many articles and poems - and for his devotion to God, family and his calling to the field of higher education.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Gail Edgren of St. Charles, Roger and Cheryl Edgren of Grand Rapids and Paul and Barbara Edgren of Traverse City; daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Terry Flynn of Traverse City; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
