California, Kansas Athletes Place High in Competition
NORWALK, CA (June 4, 2002) - Noah Bryant of Montecito Covenant Church in Santa
Barbara won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) shot put
competition at the state high school track and field meet last Saturday at
Cerritos College.
Bryant, a senior at Carpenteria High School in Santa Barbara, was
California's top-rated thrower in the shot put heading into the state meet.
He tossed the shot put 65 feet, seven and three-quarter inches to win the
event. Last year, Bryant placed third in the state shot put competition. He
was also an all-area lineman during the football season.
On May 24, Bryant had a personal-best throw of 66 feet seven and one-half
inches to win the
Southern Section Masters track and field meet. The mark was third in the
nation this spring behind Kevin Bookout of Stroud High School in Stroud,
Oklahoma, (70 feet one and one-half inches) and Lucas Mireles of Calallen
High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, (66 feet 11 and one-half inches).
Another Covenant high school student starred in state track and field
action. Matt Swedlund of Brookwood Covenant Church in Topeka, Kansas,
placed second in the Kansas State Class 6A Track and Field Championships in
Wichita last month, running a season-best time of 4 minutes, 19.67 seconds
in the 1,600-meter race, just behind Ryan Wilson's 4:19.39 effort.
It was the second straight year Swedlund was the runner up in the 1,600.
Swedlund, who won league and regional 1,600 titles, had already run a
4:20.6 earlier this year. Swedlund was a standout runner during cross
country season last fall and played on the school's varsity basketball
team this winter.
