Three Covenant Musicians Honored for Service
NEW BRIGHTON, MN (June 5, 2002) - Salem Covenant Church in New Brighton will
honor organist Cindy Reents for 25 years of music ministry service with a
silver anniversary reception and short program Sunday at the church.
Since earning her music degree at Bethel College in St. Paul, Reents has
become known for her work as a pianist and organist at Salem Covenant. She
currently serves as a secretary for the music department at Bethel. Pastor
Don Johnson noted that her versatility has made her especially valuable for
the congregation of 700.
"She plays at all three services for the church and she is extremely
competent from jazz to high classical," Johnson said. "It seems like her
talents know no boundaries and she ministers in such incredible ways."
Two other Covenanters have already been honored for their lengthy service
in worship and music.
Charlie Blood was honored for 25 years of service as music director for
Bethany Covenant Church in Bedford, New Hampshire, May 5. Blood is a music
teacher for the Derry School District in New Hampshire and is an
accompanist for the Manchester Choral Society, the premier singing group in
that area. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New
Hampshire, Charlie and wife, Judy, had long shared music responsibilities
at the church.
"He is extremely talented and is really able to give a musical coordination
to the whole service," says Pastor Robert Bergquist. "He's sensitive to
themes of a particular service, and that's crucial. He is highly regarded
for his talent in the community, but he's very self-effacing. He has a
talent, but he wants to use it for God's glory. He's a joy to work with."
Karen Patitucci was recognized for her drama writing skills at Hope Center
Covenant Church in Pleasant Hill, California on May 19.
Patitucci has written more than 1,000 dramas of various lengths for the
church and has been the director of the congregation's version of The
Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, which has been used for community
outreach during Christmas. She and husband, Tom, have been at the church
since it was founded in 1978. An English major at California State
University-Hayward, she was asked to write dramas by one of its founding
pastors, Lon Allison. She's been doing it ever since.
"I think she really feels it's a gift from God," said Tom Patitucci, the
church's director of music. "But people skills make her good at it, too."
