Couple Escapes Injury After Lightning Strikes Tree

MADISON, NC (June 5, 2002) - Clay and Penny Barham, members of Kallam Grove Christian Church in Madison, escaped injury after lightning struck an area just outside their home last Saturday, Covenant News Service has learned.

Penny Barham is chair of the executive board of the Southeast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church. She said that she and her husband were in the basement of their home when lightning struck a tree near the house. The electric force apparently traveled through the tree root network to the house where the Barhams were standing inside the back door. The shock knocked Penny to the floor and knocked Clay off balance. They were examined at a hospital and released later.

The storm that struck Rockingham County and the Bethany community produced some damage to large trees and other vegetation, but no serious injuries were reported, Penny said.
