Institute to Focus on Community Transformation

ENCINO, CA (June 10, 2002) - Covenant Ministries of Benevolence (CMB), through its Compassion and Justice Ministries, is sponsoring the Covenant Institute for Community Transformation August 5-9 at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino.

The event in southern California is receiving collaborative assistance from the Departments of World Mission and Church Growth and Evangelism of the Evangelical Covenant Church, as well as the Pacific Southwest Conference. The Covenant Institute for Community Transformation is described as "a training event for Covenant people involved in outreach ministry with poor and at-risk people."

Max Lopez-Cepero, director of Compassion and Justice Ministries, is one of four teachers for the event. Other teachers include Ed Delgado, academic dean at Centro Hispano de Estudios Teologicos (CHET) in Bell Gardens, California; Harvey Drake, founder and president of Emerald City Outreach Ministries in Seattle, Washington; and long-time Covenant missionary to Oaxaca, Mexico, Nancy Jo Hoover, who is now facilitator of International Holistic Ministries for the Evangelical Covenant Church. Case studies, plenary sessions and workshops are among the tools to be used to educate and stimulate discussion.

Registration for the event (tuition, room and board) is $175. Registration fees can be sent to Anita Elseth at the Pacific Southwest Conference office, 1333 Willow Pass Road, Suite 212, Concord, California 94520. Elseth can be reached by telephone at 925-677-2140, extension 12.

Invitations are being sent to a number of people in the Covenant who are involved in holistic outreach, said Lopez-Cepero. However, there are a limited number of spaces for others involved in holistic outreach who are interested in attending. For more information, call Lopez-Cepero at 773-878-8200, extension 5023, or email him at malopezcepero@covenantbenevolence.org.
