Covenant Bookstore Provided Bibles Used in Film

CHICAGO, IL (July 16, 2002) - A movie that opened this week in the United States received an assist from Covenant Bookstore, which provided the bibles that were used in the film.

Road to Perdition is a DreamWorks/Twentieth Century Fox production starring two-time Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. It was filmed in the Chicago area from March through June last year. The film is set in 1930s Chicago and chronicles a gangster father's decision to hide his son from gangsters who are out to kill him. The movie is based on a 1998 novel by Max Allen Collins.

Although the movie is rated R and contains graphic violence, it has a theme that some Christians may find of interest - the ultimate choice by human beings to either follow a road that leads to Heaven (paradise) or one that leads to Hell (perdition). Hanks, who participated in youth group activities at First Covenant Church in Oakland, California, stated in a movie promotional piece that in this case "the message from Michael, the father, to Michael, the son, is that you get to choose the road you're on in this life, but don't choose what I have chosen . . . the road I've been on all of my life. Somewhere in my past, I made the choice to go in a certain direction, and it leads right to perdition."
