Ogilvie (MN) Celebrates 100 Years of Ministry
OGILVIE, MN (July 16, 2002) - Jim Sundholm, director of Covenant World Relief,
spoke at the Lewis Lake Covenant Church centennial worship service Sunday a
with 350 in attendance.
The 100th anniversary weekend event July 13-14 began with a picnic and an
open house on Saturday. The congregation also held a dinner and program
later that evening with numerous former members traveling to Ogilvie to
participate in the celebratory events. Marden Wickman, a retired pastor who
served at Lewis Lake Covenant in the 1940s, was among the guests.
"It was probably the biggest event the Lewis Lake church has ever done,"
said Pastor Robert DeYoung. "We had a lot of people working very hard
during the past three or four months - it really helped us band together."
Lewis Lake Covenant is located in east central Minnesota, 50 miles north of
the Twin Cities. The church is located in an unincorporated area eight
miles south of Ogilvie, a town of about 500. The church averages 150 in
worship attendance and parishioners are highly involved in Christian
education and Sunday school activities, according to church
secretary Betty Saltzer. DeYoung, who has been the pastor for two decades,
said recent growth at the church has encouraged him.
"Even though it's the same location, things have changed rapidly," DeYoung
said. "The thing that encourages me the most is the spirit of the church.
People are very open to new people and they make it a place where people
can be relaxed and comfortable. It's a place that stands firm in the faith
and makes people feel welcome. And the leadership has worked hard to bring
in new leaders and that's been a crucial part of being able to move
forward."
