Major Expansion Projects at Life Church
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (July 26, 2002) - The largest congregation in the Evangelical
Covenant Church has started extensive building on both of its Oklahoma City
campuses this summer.
Life Church merged with another local congregation, Metro Church, last
year. The Metro Church facility now serves as the east campus of Life
Church. Metro had started construction of a three-level, 48,000-square-foot
training center before the merger. Life Church will complete that project
in the coming months and will move its offices to that campus.
The lower floor of the training center will house the church's
administrative offices. The church hopes to move the offices in the fall.
The middle floor will include an additional worship area and multipurpose
space for small group activities, among other things. The
top floor is still in the design phase, according to Tracy Boring,
executive assistant to pastor Jerry Hurley. Life Church presently has two
services at the east campus and averages 1,500 in combined attendance.
The west campus construction project, which has about 30,000 square feet,
includes a multipurpose double gymnasium and a 2,000-seat auditorium. The
project has been planned for more than two years, said Kevin Penry, pastor
of multi-campus development. The estimated cost is $3.4 million.
Life Church already has a worship space at the west campus, but it cannot
accommodate the number of parishioners (4,500) that normally attend one of
five services there each weekend.
In the summer of 1999 the church began plans for this expansion and
received a city permit in June. The church broke ground shortly thereafter
and concrete for the flooring was recently poured. The church hopes to hold
Easter services there next spring.
Founded in January 1995, Life Church has an average worship attendance of
about 6,000 under pastor Craig Groeschel. The congregation had a combined
worship attendance of 5,124 in 2001, according to the latest statistics in
the Covenant Yearbook.. Life Church has three campuses, including a
satellite site in Tulsa, which is 90 minutes away. More campuses are being
planned for the future, according to Penry.
