Hillside (CA) Pitcher Named to All-World Series Team
HIGH POINT, NC (July 29, 2002) - Steven Fischback of Hillside Covenant Church in
Walnut Creek, California, was named to the All-World Series team as his
Golden State Baseball Club placed third in the United States Specialty
Sports Association (USSSA) 13-year-old World Series last week.
Fischback's team finished 8-2 overall in the 66-team event. The Patriots
lost twice to a team from Beaver Valley, Pennsylvania, during the tourney.
Fischback, an incoming freshman at Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek,
turns 14 on August 29.
During pool play, Golden State went 3-0 as Fischback helped beat a team
from Texas by pitching two scoreless innings and producing a game-winning
RBI single. Fischback saved one game during playoff action and tossed five
innings last Saturday to help his team earn the third-place finish. He hit
.321 with 10 runs batted in and allowed just
one earned run in 14 innings of pitching.
Meanwhile, another Hillside Covenant Church student, North Park University
incoming junior Jeff Hanson, recently finished his summer baseball season
with Athletes in Action (AIA), a sports ministry sponsored by Campus
Crusade for Christ.
Hanson finished 5-3 overall for AIA, which is based in Xenia, Ohio. His
team was eliminated in the Central Regionals of the National Baseball
Congress and finished 17-25 overall. Hanson has been the top pitcher at
North Park the past two seasons and is among the season and career leaders
in strikeouts and innings pitched.
The AIA squad Hanson pitched for competed in the Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska,
Kansas (MINK) Collegiate Baseball League, which has produced such major
league stars as recent Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis
Cardinals. Another AIA squad played in a similar college baseball league
in Alaska.
