Great Lakes Covenant Village Plans $16 Million Expansion
GRAND RAPIDS, MI (August 6, 2002) - Covenant Village of the Great Lakes recently
broke ground for a $16 million building that will add 105 apartment homes
for independent retirement living and a community center to its 30-acre
campus.
The building will include a series of residential wings connected to a
34,000-square-foot two-story community center. The future hub of campus
activities, the community center will house administrative offices and a
host of amenities and services for residents.
The community's main dining room, a coffee shop, game room, general store,
creative arts center and library will be located on the main floor, along
with administrative offices. Office space will also be available for
residents' use.
The lower level will house a chapel, bank, post office, a pool, children's
playroom, hair salon and several classrooms. The lower level will also be
the focal point for the community's wellness program, which will include a
Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, exercise room and health club café. A deck will
bridge indoor facilities to outdoor activity options, including planned
walking trails.
The 105 apartment homes will range from 675-squa
re-foot one-bedroom models to 1,305-square-foot two-bedroom two-bath deluxe
residences. Each will feature a balcony, patio or an enclosed porch, which
will expand living space.
The building will be set on the south side of the community's campus,
overlooking one of the last large stands of timber in northwest Grand
Rapids. To blend with the single-family residences in the neighborhood and
offer residents attractive views, the building will be stepped from two
stories in the front to three stories toward the timberland. The exterior
facade will be brick and siding. Occupancy is projected for autumn 2003.
Covenant Village currently operates an 82-unit assisted living residence
that provides both physical and memory-loss support. The continuing care
retirement community has partnered with local nursing centers to provide
skilled nursing care.
Campus central facilities and the infrastructure included in the current
construction project will accommodate the planned expansion of the
community. A second phase of development will add 82 apartments, bringing
the total number of apartments available for independent senior living to
187.
Covenant Village is administered by Chicago-based Covenant Retirement
Communities, Inc., on behalf of the Board of Benevolence of the Evangelical
Covenant Church. One of the nation's largest not-for-profit retirement
community organizations, Covenant
