'Scrappers' Stage Comeback to Edge Past 'Scholars'
CHICAGO, IL (August 7, 2002) - Nikki Carlson's two-run double keyed a four-run
sixth inning as the Scrappers from Covenant Office edged the Scholars of
North Park Theological Seminary (NPTS) 10-7 to take the regular season
title of the Covenant Softball League of Chicago Tuesday night at Legion
Park.
Joel Pearson had tied the game earlier in the inning with an RBI single.
Eric Carlson later added an RBI double for Covenant Office, which ended
regular season play 7-2 to get the top seed for the league's upcoming
playoffs. NPTS fell to 6-3 despite out-hitting Covenant Office 16-11. Joel
Delp had three hits, including two RBI singles, to lead NPTS.
Covenant Office will host Albany Park Covenant Church (3-5-1) in a 5:45

Ravenswood Covenant Church (5-3-1) at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal. The
two winners meet August 21 at Thillens Stadium in a 9 p.m. championship
game that will also raise funds for Ravenswood Covenant Church Childcare
Center.
Covenant Office had trailed 5-0 in the fourth inning Tuesday before Matt
Dyment's two-run homer helped his team narrow the lead to 5-3. After Fadil
Lee's RBI single put NPTS ahead, Carla Dyment's two-run single in the
bottom half of the fifth narrowed the Covenant Office deficit to 7-6.
NPTS opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning with
four consecutive singles. Run-scoring hits by Mike Haefner, Rico Altiery
and Delp keyed a three-run fourth inning to put NPTS ahead by five runs
before Covenant Office began its comeback.
